I’ve a long way to go with this butterfly identification business, and it wasn’t until I got home and looked at my photos that I was able to decide that the white butterflies along the Yellow Brick Road were Green-veined Whites - my photo looks exactly like the one in “Britain’s Butterflies” so that helps.

At Sands Lake, I was able to spot but not photograph a Spotted Flycatcher - it was mostly tucked away in a thicket. Also of note was a COmmon Lizard that scuttled across the boardwalk. There were many of the usual birds present, including Long-tailed Tits, a Whitethroat performing spectacular song flights, and multiple Willow Warblers in song, but I didn’t hear any Chiffies.

Between Sands lake and the fenced scrape at Slack 52 is a sheltered area where I have often seen damselflies, and here I found my first of the year:

I’m a bit rusty, so once again I was looking at the book when I got home, but that’s an Azure Damselfly, one of several fresh-looking specimens on the scene.

Also on the dunes were Orange Tip butterflies, a Meadow brown, and some little blue ones that I couldn’t get a good look at.
