Lunt Meadows and West Lancs mosses
A quick trip around Lunt Meadows on a windy day failed to produce the Marsh Harrier we were romised in the car park, but Swifts were out in force, joining Sand Martins and the other hirundines. Splendid views of all of these birds as they were almost stalled flying into the stiff breeze.
Other sightings included Sedge Warbler, Blackcap, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Kestrel and Mistle Thrush. A small grebe was presumably a dabchick rather than something more exotic.
The route back took in Downholland and Plex mosses, where we counted zero Dotterels. The highlight was a sensationally bright rainbow; birding-wise a dramatic aerial battle between Carrion Crows and a Buzzard. More birds: Wheatear, wagtails pied and white, Corn Bunting, another Kestrel, Stock Dove.
